Bloomberg Campaign Says It Spent Record $220 Million in January

(Bloomberg) -- Michael Bloomberg spent $220.4 million on his Democratic presidential campaign in January, his campaign said, the highest monthly expenditure of any candidate in history.

Overall, he spent $409 million since launching his campaign in late November, dwarfing the outlays of his Democratic rivals. That includes $258.7 million on television advertising, $53.6 million on digital advertising and $7.3 million on polling, according to figures the campaign said it was filing with the Federal Election Commission.

“Our campaign has built a nationwide organization,” said campaign manager Keven Sheekey. “With over 2,400 staff across 43 states today, Mike is the only candidate with the record and resources to build the national infrastructure Democrats need to beat Donald Trump.”

The big expenditures have helped Bloomberg move up steadily in the polls and earn a spot in Wednesday’s Democratic debate in Las Vegas and Tuesday’s debate in South Carolina. He was roundly attacked by rival delegates in Wednesday’s debate and may need even more advertising to recover from a rocky performance.

Bloomberg, who is self-financing his run, has put $464 million into his campaign, leaving him with $55.1 million cash on hand at the end of January. That far exceeded fund-raising by other campaigns in the fourth quarter, including the $60 million that President Donald Trump and his allied committees took in.

The monthly total eclipses the $126 million that President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign spent in September 2012, a little more than a month before Election Day.
