$8 Bunnings buy transforms plain Ikea cube: 'So much nicer!'

A savvy DIYer has shown how they transformed a plain furniture staple that many of us might already own into something a little bit more chic, stylish and unique, all while sticking to a budget.

Betty, from South Australia, decided that her basic, white Ikea Kallax storage cube needed a bit of a makeover so she turned to good old Bunnings Warehouse for a cheap and cheerful solution.

“We’re a busy family with four kids so Ikea furniture is our go-to for affordable and practical solutions,” the mum tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“But I wanted to give the cube a little bit more of a homely look so I searched Bunnings for different pieces of wood panels and none fitted the look I wanted,” she adds.

That’s until she came across the ‘Flexi Storage’ oak shelves which come in a range of lengths and widths and are pre-cut and ready to go. She grabbed two of the 900mm x 200mm shelves at $9.87 each and two of the 600mm x 200mm shelves at $7.67 each which ‘fit perfectly’ with her plan.

“The shelves were an affordable option in the colour I wanted, plus no cutting which is a bonus!” she explains.

So, why would you add extra shelves to a storage cube? For Betty, it was all about making the piece look more polished and finished off, so she attached the shelves using liquid nails to the top of the unit giving it a sleek feel.

The whole makeover cost her just $35, excluding the original price of the Ikea cube, which proves that prettying up a boring bit of furniture doesn’t need to break the bank.

“This is smart,” said another.

“The wood top makes all the difference,” added one.

Others flooded the comments section with questions about how and what Betty used to complete the DIY as well as some who shared pics of similar projects they’d done at home.
