Colin the Caterpillar cake has been a staple at British birthday parties since it was first introduced by M&S three decades ago in 1990 - and now it comes in jar form too.
Ideal for when you feel like treating yourself to a smaller portion of Colin for dessert, the new Colin the Caterpillar cake jar landed in M&S stores this week alongside two other “cake-away” flavours: the fruity raspberry ripple and caramel-based trillionaire’s.
The Colin cake features layers of rich chocolate sponge, Belgian chocolate sauce, chocolate ganache, milk and while chocolate chips and there’s a mini white chocolate Colin face on top too.
Raspberry ripple has layers of madeira sponge, vanilla buttercream, raspberry jam and freeze dried raspberry pieces while the trillionare’s cake jar also has madeira sponge, salted caramel sauce, chocolate ganache, chocolate shortcake balls and fudge pieces.
The 170g jars cost £4 each and come in reusable packaging. The Colin jar has 387 calories per half a jar meaning if you were to devour the whole thing it would be 774 calories. The recommended daily calorie intake for an adult woman is 2,000 and for an adult man it’s 2,500.
“These cake jars are absolutely delicious and are perfect for picnics, lunches on the go – or pretty much whenever you need a sweet fix,” Natalie Tate, lead product developer for M&S Cakes said in a statement.
“Gone are the days of picking a cake to suit all tastes – you can now mix and match to suit everyone. Much like an indulgent ice cream tub – there is something about diving straight in with a spoon that makes the experience all the more delicious."
As well as being announced by the retail giant on Twitter, Instagram account @newfoodsuk was one of the first to pick up the jars and its posts has seen over 16,000 ‘likes’.
Social media users were quick to voice their excitement about the new cakes, with one writing: “I want every single one!”
Another said: “How about this for a craving 😍”
While a Twitter user added: “I need a Colin the caterpillar cake jar and I need it now.”
The jars are available in M&S stores now. We’ll race you there.
