Can members of the Royal Family be arrested by the police?

After Prince Philip’s scary car accident, many have been wondering if the royal could even be arrested for the collision between his Land Rover and a Kia.

And it turns out that the Duke of Edinburgh technically could be arrested by police.

But the likes of Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton can be arrested for some things.

According to the legal encyclopedia, Halbury’s Laws of England, members of the Royal Household cannot be arrested in civil proceedings.

And if they ever did something worthy of arrest, they can’t be arrested in the presence of the monarch – so they could literally avoid being cuffed by the police if they never leave the Queen’s side.

The rule also takes the various royal residences into account as well, meaning the likes of Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace are off limits for police.

But back in 2002, Princess Anne was fined $900 and forced to pay compensation after pleading guilty to a charge of her dog attacking children.

And in 2001, she was fined for speeding in her Bentley after admitting to driving 93mph in a 70mph zone.

She was the first member of the royal family to plead guilty to a criminal offence.
