Charles' phone calls to Camilla on night of Di's death
It’s one of those tragic moments in history where you know exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard about Princess Diana’s death.
It’s now been revealed how Prince Charles found out – with royal biographer Penny Junor revealing it was through a 1am phone call from the British ambassador in Paris, Robin Janvrin.

With only sketchy details of the crash, and the belief that Diana had suffered a broken arm, Prince Charles and the Queen were woken at Balmoral castle.
However, according to royal insider Penny, rather than coming together in tragedy, Prince Charles was left alone, calling Camilla Parker Bowles instead for comfort.
Penny reveals how shocked Camilla was when Charles called her with the news just hours after Princess Diana's death, and how fearful they both were of the fallout.
“When he rang at 3.45am with the news that Diana had just died on the operating table, she was as shocked as he was — and terrified for him,” Penny explains in the Daily Mail.
“Charles knew immediately what the public reaction would be: they would blame him.”
Ultimately, it was left for the Queen to call the shots. According to Penny, it was her decision to let Prince William and Prince Harry sleep through the night, rather than be told their mother had died.
The royal biographer reveals Prince Charles was deeply shaken by his ex-wife’s death, going for long walks alone and crying “copiously”.
Despite years of problems between then, including Princess Diana’s interviews revealing the troubles in their relationship, Charles was said to still love the mother of his children.
To make matters worse, despite Camilla's constant support for Prince Charles and being his shoulder to cry on, the Queen – who had made her feelings about the divorcee clear before Di’s death – reinforced her belief that Camilla was to blame for all the scandal that had plagued the royal family.
“The Queen's stance was one of monarch, not mother, and therein lay the problem,” Penny reveals in the DailyMail. “Her son badly needed support and this woman had given it to him.”
