'Cheaper to deter Putin in Ukraine than to allow him to win' — UK Defense Minister

Western nations must prevent Russian dictator Vladimir Putin from winning the war, said UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps on BBC Radio 4 on May 14.

It is up to Ukraine to decide if it is prepared for a settlement, he said.

"I don't think an aggressor should be rewarded," Shapps said.

"My simple message to the world and in particular to the U.S. — it is a lot cheaper to defend and therefore to deter Putin here and now than it is to allow him to win."

A victory for Russia in the war in Ukraine would allow "autocrats elsewhere getting the idea that the rest of the world is a soft touch and you can walk in and take over countries," he said.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that after a prolonged delay in aid to Ukraine, the United States and Ukraine's other partners are scrambling to get weapons. The U.S. and over 50 other countries are not backing down from supporting Ukraine, and assistance will continue, he added.
