Wang said both countries should jointly maintain tranquility in the border areas to return China-India relations to the track of healthy and stable development as soon as possible, according to the Chinese statement.

Under the consensus reached on Wednesday, China and India agreed to further refine the rules for border management, and enhance confidence-building measures to achieve sustainable peace and stability in the border areas.

Both sides also agreed to continue strengthening cross-border exchanges and cooperation, including resuming Indian pilgrims’ visits to Tibet, and cross-border river cooperation and trade.

Meanwhile, the two countries agreed to hold the next round of special representatives’ meeting in India next year.

Dedicated talks over ways to resolve disputes involving the 3,488-kilometer (2,167-mile) China-India border have been suspended since 2020.

The decision to resume discussions — along with the disengagement of troops in the last two points of contention — came in October just before the meeting of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in Brazil.
