Christmas casual jobs: Top 10 employers hiring for the holidays

Big clothing and jewellery brands such as Prouds, Bed Bath N’ Table and Sunglass Hut are on the hunt for Christmas staff.

Hiring for the Christmas season is well underway and it's expected to be a bumper year, with more Aussies looking for work as the cost of living and interest rate hikes continue to soar.

New data from Indeed found more Aussies were searching for Christmas casual jobs this year, mostly in retail and hospitality, with job searches up 40 per cent on the platform compared to 2022.

The good news is there are also more Christmas jobs available this year. Jobs including keywords such as “Christmas” made up 2.8 per cent of all postings on the platform at the end of September, up from 2.6 per cent the same time last year.

Top 10 Christmas jobs

The most Christmas job opportunities can be found in the retail sector, Indeed found, with big clothing and jewellery brands leading the way.

Here are the top 10 employers this Christmas, based on the volume of job postings:

The Christmas spending spree can also spill over into other parts of the economy, with increased retail traffic and holiday travel also creating additional jobs in the hospitality sector.

Christmas toys, clothes and other gifts also need to be delivered to stores from warehouses, creating more jobs in transport and logistics. Australia Post, for example, was looking to fill around 3,000 Christmas casual jobs this year.

Expert tips to get the job

With an influx of people looking for Christmas casual jobs, Indeed career coach Sally McKibbin said it was important for jobseekers to find a way to stand out.

“Some of the things I would recommend are making sure your skills align to the job description and matching the type of wording you are using to the job ad,” McKibbin told Yahoo Finance.

“Also showcasing any transferable skills that you have and making sure that your resume is quite concise - ideally no more than two pages to ensure it is capturing the attention of the recruiter.

“With so much interest in these types of roles this year, following up with those applications is also a way to stand out.”

Turning it into a permanent gig

Once you’ve landed the job, there could also be an opportunity to turn it into a more permanent role after the Christmas season ends.

“I think the best thing to do is to be showing genuine enthusiasm in the role. Being really positive and having a willingness to go the extra mile in such a busy time across hospitality and retail won’t go unnoticed,” McKibbin said.

“Showing you can adapt to new tasks and skills, and your ability to pick those up, will make you a more valuable asset.”

Other tips included being punctual and reliable, collaborating with your colleagues and chatting with the manager to let them know you are keen to stay on.
