Coles shopper's wild find in eggs while cooking breakfast: 'Holy s***'

A mother and son have shared their extraordinary find in their Coles eggs while cooking breakfast on Monday.

Kirsten and son Kai, who are holidaying in Yamba on the NSW North Coast, were cooking up a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs when they discovered an egg with a double yolk.

The mum immediately took to the Coles Facebook page to share the hilarious video of Kai repeatedly cracking eggs with double yolks into the fry pan.

“Nine eggs and 18 yolks. Where do you get your chickens Coles?” Kirsten wrote on the post with the 44-second video.

“This is insane,” she says as Kai cracks the eighth double yolk egg into the pan.

“Are you doing another one?” she asks her son.

“Oh yeah, I’ll do another one,” he says, while cracking the ninth double yolk egg.

The video concludes with Kirsten showing users the label of the dozen Coles Jumbo Free Range Eggs she purchased from the supermarket's Yamba store earlier this week.

“These are the eggs you want to be getting guys,” she says, pointing to the label.

'Might be a full dozen doublers', Coles shopper says

Kirsten told Yahoo News Australia Kai was excited when he discovered the first egg with a double yolk.

But by the time the pair got to the ninth egg, they were “mind-blown” as each was a double yolker.

“There’s still three eggs in the carton. Might be a full dozen doublers,” she laughed.

“Don’t know what’s going on with the chickens up here."

The amused mother suggested perhaps it was a lucky sign, saying: “Might have to buy a lotto ticket!”

What are the chances of getting a double-yolk egg?

According to Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, the chances of getting a double yolker is about one in 1000.

Theoretically, this means the likelihood of getting nine double-yolk eggs in the one carton is about one in one octillion chance (or 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000).

Dr Karl says double yolkers occur when a hen's "ovary is too enthusiastic" and releases more than one yolk during her daily ovulation cycle.

Just like humans, it’s possible for two, or more, eggs to make their way from the ovary and through the reproductive tract. In fact, the world record for the most yolks inside one eggshell is nine.

Although double yolkers can look off-putting, Kelly Seagrave, from Eggs Australia, confirmed "double yolkers are definitely safe to eat".

She also revealed Josh's Rainbow Eggs in Australia did a special promotion for cartons of double yolkers on World Egg Day last year.
