The Color Purple film: EYNTK
*Spoilers alert*
Alice Walker's 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple, was first adapted into an Oscar-nominated film back in 1985 starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. Thanks to its immense success, the classic movie was then turned into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical in 2005, before being lifted from the stage to the big screen in 2023.
Directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by none other than Oprah herself, the film follows the life of Celie Harris, a young Black woman struggling to find her way in the early 1900s in the American South.
While the film still has a little while to go before it's dropped in cinemas, plenty of info regarding the release, cast, and trailer has been recently circulating the internet. So, here's everything you need to know about The Color Purple...
What is The Color Purple About?
The main character, Celie, is born into poverty in rural Georgia. After being raped by her stepfather, she subsequently has her children taken away from her, before being coerced into marriage.
What follows is Celie's journey to overcome her trauma, which sees her become a courageous and empowered woman, not afraid to fight back.
And according to IMDb, the 2023 version's synopsis reads: "Musical adaptation of Alice Walker's novel about the life-long struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s."
Who will star in The Color Purple?
Just like the original film, this adaptation features a star-studded line-up, including:
Singer Fantasia Barrino stars as Celie
Orange Is The New Black's Danielle Brooks as Sofia. (The actor also played the same character on Broadway.)
Straight Outta Compton's Corey Hawkins as Harpo
H.E.R. as Squeak
Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery
The Little Mermaid's Halle Bailey as Young Nettie
Ciara as Nettie
