Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of unmanned aerial combat systems battalion 'Achilles' of the Ivan Sirko 92nd Assault Brigade, explained what would happen if Russia succeeds in capturing Chasiv Yar in an interview with Radio NV on March 27.

"At the moment, the enemy is storming very, very actively in the direction of Chasiv Yar,” Fedorenko said on Radio NV.

“And the reason for that is simple – Chasiv Yar is a dominant height. If enemy gets it, he will be able to take fire control of the towns of Kostyantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, and form a powerful foothold for further attack and occupation of Kostyantynivka, and areas in direction of Sloviansk."

Russia is sparing no expense in terms of equipment, manpower and drones in this area, and Russian guided aerial bombs have a significant impact on the frontline, he added.

Fedorenko said that Chasiv Yar became a new target for Russians and capturing it would be a strategic success for them.

"Why are Bohdanivka and Ivanivske burning, why are Klishchiyivka and Andriivka being stormed?”, battalion commander said.

“Because in order to support their attack and assault operations, the front line must always be leveled. That’s what the enemy is trying to do.”

“But he cannot fix the frontline because Ukrainian Armed Forces are suppressing any Russian assaults," he explained.

What is known about Russia's offensive on Chasiv Yar

US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on March 24 reported that Russian troops are approaching the outskirts of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk Oblast, but are unlikely to surround or capture it in the coming months.

Based on the available evidence, ISW experts concluded that Russian troops have been stopped approximately a mile from a town.

ISW is not revealing its sources or describing any more detail at this time to preserve Ukraine's operational security, noting that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have established significant ring-shaped fortifications in the Chasiv Yar area. Therefore, ISW assumes that trying to break through these defenses will be a significant challenge for Russians if they maintain their current pace of advance in the area.
