Controversial cricketer's bold retirement declaration

West Indies star Chris Gayle is set to retire from one-day internationals after this year’s World Cup.

The controversial batsman and part-time spinner revealed his decision on Monday morning.

Gayle, whose 9727 ODI runs are second only to Brian Lara among West Indians, has played 284 matches since making his international debut in 1999.

The 39-year-old was typically colourful in announcing his plan to retire.

“You’re looking at a great man,” he said.

I’m the greatest player in the world. Of course I’m still the Universe Boss. That will never change. I’ll take that to the grave.

I’m looking to draw the line – or should I say cut the string – let the youngsters have some fun and I can sit back in the party stand,” he said.

Gayle also set the bar high for the World Cup, which begins in May, saying the younger West Indian players “owed” it to him to end his career with a victory.

“Absolutely, the youngsters owe it to me.

“They have to do that for me and try and get me the trophy. But I’ll be looking to put my input in as well.”

“It is a big year for me. I hope 2019 can finish for me on a great note.”

Before he can set about making a run at the World Cup, Gayle will first concentrate on the upcoming ODI series against England.

Gayle said the series was most likely the final time he would represent the West Indies at home.

This series against England might be the last time people get to see the Universe Boss on local soil,” he said.

The last game I played in Barbados for Jamaica I got a hundred and it would be nice to continue where I left off and entertain the home fans as much as possible.

At the end of the day everybody should be happy and enjoy the game.”
