Controversy erupts after linesman 'celebrates' dodgy goal

Everton coach Marco Silva called for video assistant referees to be introduced in the Premier League after referee Jon Moss and assistant Harry Lennard failed to spot a “clear offside” for Arsenal’s crucial second goal.

Everton had created the best chances, but the match was decided over three second-half minutes when an outstanding finish from Alexandre Lacazette was followed up by Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang scoring after receiving Aaron Ramsey’s improvised flick while in an obviously offside position.

The officials were blasted by fans on social media by missing the clear indiscretion.

Perhaps the even bigger issue however was linesman Harry Lennard’s reaction to the goal.

Meanwhile, Silva felt it was a decisive moment and, with the Premier League having delayed bringing in VAR until at least next year, hopes that the technology will soon be used.

“It [VAR] will help for sure,” Silva said. “I think it’s important. I understand what they’re thinking: not stopping the game every time. They’re trying to find the best way to do that as soon as possible. Maybe next season we’ll have VAR.

“We were in control in that moment. It was really hard for us. It’s really frustrating. We had just one player in our box. It’s clear where he is in that moment and it’s clear on the second touch [by Ramsey] where the player who finishes it is, as well. He’s clearly offside. For me, it’s a little bit strange but it’s OK. I make mistakes, my players, as well. Assistant referees can make them.”

Everton have won only three of their past 30 league away games and, after losing last week at home against West Ham United, Silva acknowledged his team needed to improve their finishing.

“The result didn’t reflect the performance of both teams,” Silva said. “We clearly deserved more. At this level we have to be more effective. Last week we created more chances than our opponents and this afternoon again. I know the only way to change it – by working.”
