Crosswalk coming for Saskatoon intersection where 62-year-old pedestrian was killed in 2022
The City of Saskatoon says it will be making safety improvements for pedestrians at 22nd Street and Avenue X, near Westgate Plaza, an intersection where a 62-year-old pedestrian was killed two years ago.
The city has received a $78,000 provincial grant, funded through photo speed enforcement fines, to add a pedestrian-activated crosswalk signal, along with pavement markings and signage, at the intersection.
Safety for pedestrians crossing at the busy intersection will be "significantly improved once the upgrade is complete," said Jay Magus, the city's director of transportation, in a Thursday news release.
Currently, there are no pavement markings or illuminated signals at that intersection, he said.
On Oct. 2, 2022, a 62-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the street at the intersection. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, Saskatoon police said at the time.
