Actor and singer David Cassidy, who rose to fame as Keith Partridge in the classic '70s series The Partridge Family, has died at the age of 67.

Cassidy passed away on Tuesday night (November 21) after being hospitalised for multiple organ failure a few days ago.

His publicist JoAnn Geffen confirmed in a statement: "On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy.

"David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years."

Cassidy was hospitalised for liver and kidney failure last week. He struggled with alcoholism throughout his life, resulting in a stint in rehab in 2014. He also revealed earlier this year that he was suffering from dementia.

A heartthrob to millions worldwide, the star made his name appearing alongside real-life stepmother Shirley Jones on The Partridge Family, which ran for a total of 96 episodes between 1970 and 1974 on ABC.

The TV-family group released 10 platinum-selling albums during the show's run. Among their biggest hits, 'I Think I Love You' reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in November 1970.

Although he struggled to lose his image as a teen idol, Cassidy had a few solo hits in his time as well, including 'Cherish' and 'I Write the Songs' – later covered by Barry Manilow.

He was nominated for an Emmy in 1978, for his guest-starring role on crime drama Police Story. This led to his own cop series, David Cassidy: Man Undercover, which was cancelled after a season.

Cassidy also made guest appearances in Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Flash (1991), Malcolm in the Middle, The John Larroquette Show and Less Than Perfect.

In 2009, he became a series regular on ABC Family sitcom Ruby & the Rockits, which was co-created by his half-brother Shaun Cassidy, and his most recent credit was a 2013 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Cassidy is survived by his two children: Arrow actress Katie, 30, and son Beau, 27.
