'Deadliest' find in Melbourne home may be new record
The massive wasps' nest found in Melbourne may be one of the largest ones ever discovered.
A pest controller’s discovery of a giant wasps' nest in an abandoned Melbourne home last year may be heading for the record books.
“Freaking hell,” Dale Armel from DAP Pest Control can be heard saying in a video of the horrifying find broadcast on Facebook Live. “Oh my god, it’s like an alien. This is unbelievable. My heart is going at a hundred miles an hour.”
Last year’s “insane” Melbourne wasps' nest find, as reported by Yahoo News Australia at the time, revealed a 1.8 metre European wasps’ nest growing out of the corner of a bathroom in a home which had stood empty for a year due to the pandemic. The insects had chewed their way into the plaster of the wall to create their new home which consisted of wood fibre and saliva.
Nest as ‘big as a 70 inch TV’
Now 10 months on, Dale says he’s still never seen anything like the colossal nest, which took him two days to exterminate.
“I reckon there is a record, at least in the bathroom,” he told the Today Show on Wednesday morning. “Normally European wasps are in the ground so they normally get treated pretty quickly before they get to this stage.”
“There was one in Tasmania which was pretty large, but I think this one was pretty up there. It was as big as a 70 inch television.”

Extermination of the ‘deadliest wasp nest in Australia’
In a series of videos posted to Dale’s social media accounts, the pest controller can be seen using multiple treatments to exterminate the uninvited colony from what he described as the “deadliest wasp nest in Australia".
“This was a very dangerous situation,” he told his followers. “If any person or child came across this nest they could have been swarmed and stung repeatedly. It had to be removed as soon as possible to ensure everyone’s safety."
