Death of Ala. Inmate Days from Freedom Under Investigation After Family Claims He Was Drugged, Raped, Beaten

An incarcerated man in an Alabama prison died from an attack 14 days before his scheduled release where he was allegedly drugged, raped, beaten and left brain dead, according to reports.

Daniel Terry Williams, 22, died days after a “possible inmate-on-inmate assault,” which took place on Oct. 22 at the Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore, Ala., the Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed to PEOPLE.

His family members claimed that police initially told them he had died from a drug overdose, WVTM 13 reports.

Amber Williams, Daniel’s fiancé told the outlet that when she went to visit him he "had bruises all down his arm, like down to his fingers."

"He had cuts up and down and bruises on his legs. And it was bad," she said.

A GoFundMe set up by Williams’ father’s employer claimed he had been severely assaulted and announced his death on Thursday.

“This baby was beaten, tortured and sexually assaulted at Staton Prison by a gang of people with only 14 days until his release,” the fundraiser, which has raised more $10,000, reads.

Following his attack, when he was transferred to the hospital, medical personnel determined he was brain dead from his injuries, according to the GoFundMe.

“The tube is out. Still brain dead and won't come back from that," an update on the fundraiser reads. “They are going to move him to a room where he will be comfortable for his time left with us.”

The ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating the matter, but it wasn't immediately clear if it's a homicide investigation. Alabama Department of Corrections did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further clarifications.

Daniel was serving a one-year sentence for theft, the department's statement says.
