A new food challenge has surfaced on TikTok, and it's not all it's cracked up to be.

The Egg Crack Challenge starts off innocently enough: A parent recruits the help of a child to make a recipe that includes eggs. Then things become chaotic. The parent surprises the kid by smashing an egg on their forehead to crack it open. In the countless Egg Crack Challenge videos uploaded to TikTok, the child usually reacts with tears, confusion, or laughter. There's even been the occasional toddler who strikes back.

Many people have questioned if the challenge take things too far. Even TikTok appears to have taken note of the controversy. For those who don't have a TikTok account or are not logged into their account, the following disclaimer is now attached to many of the Egg Crack Challenge videos: "This post may not be comfortable for some audiences. Log in to make the most of your experience."

The parenting site Motherly recently published a story urging people to stop the trend. On social media, the challenge has sparked a conversation about parents using their children as props for likes on TikTok.

"The 'egg crack challenge' is the latest 'trend' that involves parents getting 'likes' at the expense of their children. I hate this stuff—kids are not props," said one person on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Familiar with the viral egg cracking trend that is doing the rounds online? Personally, I do NOT like this—why destroy your child's trust for likes?" another user asked.

There are also those who see the challenge as nothing more than a good laugh.

"Lighten up people, labeling the crack an egg challenge as child abuse is a little bit of a stretch don’t you think. Funny is funny and that stuff is funny. Why oh why do people want to stir the pot and make a big deal out of everything," read one tweet.
