It seems bizarre that Deadpool is about to arrive on Disney's streaming service. The most acerbic character in the X-Men universe doesn't seem an obvious fit for the Mouse House's platform but, via the age-gated, adult-focused Star section, Ryan Reynold's foul-mouthed wisecracks and splattery violence are due to grace Disney+ this month.

Elsewhere, Billie Eilish takes to the stage for an innovative concert film and there's a new animated addition to the rapidly expanding world of Star Wars properties.

Pixar fans will also have the chance to get a special look inside its intriguing SparkShorts programme via a new documentary.

Here's everything arriving on Disney+ UK in the next month...

Original movies coming to Disney+ UK in September 2021

Disney and Billie Eilish are referring to Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles as "a cinematic concert experience". With experienced movie director Robert Rodriguez at the helm along with Big Hero 6 animator Patrick Osborne, it combines traditional performance scenes with animated interludes paying homage to LA.

The main body of the film is an intimate concert in which the 19-year-old singer performs the entirety of her Happier Than Ever album, in track order, on the stage of the Hollywood Bowl.

A Spark Story (24 September)

The inner workings of Pixar's short films are revealed in new feature-length documentary 'A Spark Story'. (Disney+)

The SparkShorts programme has been up and running at Pixar since 2018, giving the imaginative folk at the company six months and a limited budget to put together a short film. Originally released on YouTube, these movies are now unveiled on Disney+ — with two new shorts on the way this month and discussed later in this article.

A Spark Story is a feature-length documentary dive into the process of conceiving and making SparkShorts, with specific focus on those two new movies — Twenty Something and Nona.

Dug Days (five shorts available from 1 September)

Everybody loves Pixar's Oscar-winning 2009 movie Up, and its adorable canine character Dug is one of the reasons why. This selection of short films follows Dug and Carl living together, with much of the action taking place in the back garden of the house.

Bob Peterson, who voiced Dug in the movie, returns and also takes on writing and directing duties. The five-part series will also mark the final acting role of Ed Asner, who returns as Carl, in the wake of his tragic passing earlier this week.

Marvel Studios Legends: Shang-Chi (1 September)

As has become customary in advance of new Marvel movies and TV shows, the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is joined by the Disney+ debut of a Marvel Studios Legends episode providing all of the necessary backstory and context for what happens in the film.

That One Word: Feyenoord (Star, weekly from 1 September)

Football documentaries have become a big part of streaming offerings in recent years, and Disney+ is now getting in on the act with this look behind the scenes of Dutch club Feyenoord. With access to all areas of the Rotterdam-based team, this series follows the club during the 2020/21 season as the effects of COVID-19 continued to hit the sport hard.

The D’Amelio Show (Star, 3 September)

Fans of social media personality Charli D'Amelio — the highest-paid TikTok celebrity — and her similarly famous family will enjoy this new docuseries, which depicts the family's attempts to adjust to their newfound recognition.

American Horror Stories (Star, weekly from 8 September)

American Horror Story has been a juggernaut of a series for the indefatigable Ryan Murphy and creative partner Brad Falchuk. They've now unleashed a new spin-off in the shape of this seven-part run, which tells a different, self-contained horror tale in each episode.

Cast members include Matt Bomer, Billie Lourd, Kevin McHale and John Carroll Lynch.

Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. (weekly from 8 September)

Almost 30 years since Neil Patrick Harris said goodbye to the title role of a teen doctor in the medical series Doogie Howser, M.D., this reboot relocates the action to Hawaii. 16-year-old Harvard Medical School graduate Lahela Kameāloha, played by Secret Society of Second-Born Royals star Peyton Elizabeth Lee, is jokingly referred to as "Doogie" in reference to the previous show. As before, the series sees her balance her medical career with the problems of being a teenager.

SparkShorts: Twenty Something/Nona (shorts available from 10/17 September)

The latest additions to the canon of Pixar's low-budget SparkShorts films are two very different stories. Twenty Something, by director Aphton Corbin, focuses on the idea of adulting and how everyone is just trying to fake their way through life. Louis Gonzales's Nona, meanwhile, tells the story of a grandmother whose day watching wrestling is disturbed by the arrival of her five-year-old granddaughter.

Star Wars: Visions E1-9 (22 September)

Different anime studios are given the keys to the galaxy far, far away in 'Star Wars: Visions'. (Disney/Lucasfilm)

The Star Wars world continues to expand with this animated series in which different anime studios bring their own unique styles to stories set in the galaxy far, far away. Expect the unexpected from the 10-part anthology, which is set to explore various different corners of the universe which have been hitherto ignored by the glossier Star Wars projects.

Y: The Last Man (Star, E1-3 on 22 September then weekly)

Based on a 60-issue comic book series from the early noughties, this intriguing series follows a bizarre global event in which every creature with a Y chromosome dies simultaneously. The only exceptions are Yorick Brown and his pet capuchin monkey, with the series following them as the world attempts to adjust to this strange new reality and work out what happened.

The Great North S1 (Star, E1-2 on 29 September then weekly)

This adult animated sitcom follows a family living up in the fictional town of Lone Moose, Alaska, headed up by Nick Offerman's Beef Tobin. Jenny Slate and Will Forte are also in the main voice cast, with Alanis Morissette appearing to voice an imaginary version of herself.
