Don’t go through airport security barefoot

Everybody knows going through security at an airport is a necessary evil.

And while it can be frustrating to have to empty your pockets and pull out some of your belongings, turns out you could end up with a skin infection as well.

Thanks to increased security, many passengers are now required to remove their shoes when passing through the scanners at the airport.

But experts are warning that if you are asked to do this, you should always avoid walking barefoot.

Basically try to avoid wearing thongs when you travel – definitely a hard one for us Aussies.

The floor is so dirty around the security area, thanks to millions of people walking around without their footwear, that there is a big risk of a fungal infection like athlete’s foot.

“I haven’t taken any samples from these areas [myself], but if we do I bet we’ll find 101 different things,” Rami Calis, a podiatry instructor at Atlanta’s Emory University, told WebMD.

Always pack a spare pair of socks if you absolutely have to wear open shoes.
