Driver attracts huge crowd with 'idiot' move at popular Aussie beach

Many observers have worried about the environmental degrading unfolding with wild holiday scenes like this.

A 4WD motorist was stuck and in desperate need of rescuing ahead of the new year at the popular tourist spot of Bribie Island, and they're not the first — and likely not the last — to find themselves in such a precarious position. The submerged driver was bogged so badly on Sunday he attracted dozens of people who watched the epic fail unfold.

The driver had allegedly attempted to navigate one of the many water crossings on the Queensland island, popular with off-roaders and 4WD owners, only to find himself unable to go anywhere.

In footage captured by a drone, it appears a good samaritan stepped in and managed to pull the vehicle out of the tyre-high flowing water as holiday makers watched on.

The island is so notorious for 4WD bogging incidents that a Facebook page has been created and a community has been forged between the thousands of drivers who have experienced it firsthand.

The once-sleepy island is now visited by tens of thousands every year, and even if a day passes without a bogging, the beach has become a "carpark" during peak visiting times.

After the most recent bogging footage was shared online, Aussies were dismayed at how "packed" the area was and argued the large number of visitors were ruining the beauty of the island and posing a threat to wildlife.

"Look at the amount people that's f**king gross," one person commented, while another marvelled at what "a circus" the once "untouched playground" has become.

"How can people think that this number of vehicles on Bribie Beach isn't doing any harm to the beach??? Really?? What a joke!" another said, while one Aussie called the bogged driver "an idiot".

An owner of a towing service on Bribie Island previously told Yahoo News that risk-takers often find themselves bogged in rising ocean water. Not only is it a costly mistake, it can also be dangerous.

Depending on where on the island the stranding takes place, Rick Williams said towing costs can be between a couple of hundred dollars and up to $700.

"When it rains on Bribie Island, the water falls in the inland lagoons — those big lagoons, the water that's in there has to find its way out to the ocean... so when there's so much water there, it then breaks out across the sand, pouring into the ocean, and people then try to cross it and come into grief," he explained.
