Drivers erupt as council issues $264 parking fine 'every day'
City of Canada Bay came under fire from a fed-up resident who witnessed the 'daily occurence'
An Aussie council has vowed to make a change to a notorious stretch of road where parking fines are a "daily occurrence". The move comes after a local resident issued a warning to local residents after seeing drivers repeatedly copping fines in the same spot because of a dodgy street sign.
Drummoyne resident Meha told Yahoo News Australia that she too copped a $264 fine on Formosa Street where she lives in Sydney's inner-west. She has since let other locals know about the dodgy sign after witnessing the daily occurrence.
"Breaks my heart to see a fine every day on this street on this particular spot," she said. "This is a no-stopping sign and easily missed." Meha warned fellow residents to save their money and avoid the confusing spot.
While there is a correct 'no stopping' street sign just metres away from the spot, it points in the opposite direction, meaning many drivers miss it when they park. "It is a daily occurrence," Meha told Yahoo of the spot. "[Locals] are saying that the sign is easily missed. The council should mark it on the road too," she said.
Fellow residents agreed with Meha, saying they too have been caught out at the spot.
"I nearly parked there the other day but fortunately a guy driving past stopped and told me not to," said another resident, adding they were "so grateful" to avoid the fine.
"The road itself needs stripes painted to warn drivers. It’s so easily missed as is," said another.
Council pledges improved signage to help residents
A City of Canada Bay council spokesperson told Yahoo that while an audit revealed the 'no Stopping' sign is compliant with Australian standards, council will install additional signage to help out residents.
"An audit by Council’s Traffic Engineers found that the ‘No Stopping’ sign near 48 Formosa Street, Drummoyne, is compliant with the appropriate Australian standard," the spokesperson said.
"While the existing ‘No Stopping’ sign is compliant with the Australian standard, Council will install an additional sign at this location to further assist motorists to be aware of the ‘No Stopping’ restriction."
Street parking problems in inner-city suburb
It's not the first time parking has caused issues in the inner-west of Sydney where street parking can be hard to find. One resident in Leichhardt took things a bit too far when they infuriated neighbours by allegedly reserving street parking near their home with orange traffic cones.
"It's been ongoing for months and doesn't look renovation-related," said one fuming resident.
The road in question allegedly has no hourly restrictions, meaning locals are teased with the possibility of free parking as long as they can beat their neighbours to nabbing a spot. "[There's] not enough parking spots," the man wrote.
