The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent the Duchess of Cambridge a surprise for her 39th birthday, Us Weekly reports, and the gesture genuinely moved the royal. The outlet reported the Sussexes sent Kate a "thoughtful" card and multiple presents for her birthday, which Kate celebrated on 9 January. The outlet didn't specify what those gifts were, but a source did give Us detail on how Kate felt about them.

"It was a nice surprise," the source said. "Kate wasn’t expecting anything from the couple."

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Kate had a low-key birthday with her husband, Prince William, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, at their country home Anmer Hall, where the family has been staying during the latest lockdown.

"They baked a huge caramel and vanilla cake with 39 candles, and she was gifted a bouquet from the kids, and diamond and sapphire earrings from William, which she loves," a source told the outlet.

This isn't the first time Meghan and Harry have sent the Cambridge family gifts since they moved to the US and stepped down from their senior royal family roles last year. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also sent Christmas gifts to Kate, William and their family.

The first time Meghan met Kate, she also came bearing a belated birthday gift, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand revealed in their book Finding Freedom. Meghan met Kate on 10 January 2017, the day after Kate's birthday. Meghan brought a soft leather Smythson notebook that "helped to break the ice, as did Meghan’s cooing over then 20-month-old Charlotte," Scobie and Durand wrote. "The meeting ended with Kate letting Meghan know that she was always welcome to contact her if she needed anything."
