Dwayne Johnson has explained why he pees in water bottles at the gym, clarifying that he only uses bottles that he won't ever use for water again.

The Hollywood star's unusual habit was first revealed in a 2017 Instagram video, in which a container of urine could be seen.

In that video he said: "I don’t have time to go to the bathroom, I find a bottle, I pee in it and I keep training like a beast."

But in a new interview with Esquire, Johnson said he wanted to "give context" to why he decides to relieve himself in the gym.

He explained, "It’s not a water bottle that I’ve actually purchased solely for water that you wash and clean when you’re done using it. These are just bottles that I’m no longer using.

"Usually the gyms that I work out in don’t have a bathroom because they’re the iron paradise. They’re just hot, sweaty and dirty."

In August, Johnson shared more insight into his hygiene habits, assuring fans that he takes three showers every single day in response to the celebrity discourse about infrequent bathing.

He wrote: "Shower (cold) when I roll outta bed to get my day rollin’. Shower (warm) after my workout before work. Shower (hot) after I get home from work."
