EastEnders revisited Max Branning's self-harm plot tonight (July 21) as he opened up to his new love interest Carmel Kazemi over his troubles.

Max's sad secret was first unveiled last Christmas, in an episode which had largely focused on Lee Carter 's mental health problems as he contemplated suicide.

Max's storylines have since taken a more villainous route as he has been plotting against several Walford residents, including his brother Jack and potentially even his daughter Lauren.

However, Friday's episode saw him open up to Carmel about his dark thoughts after she caught him trying to read her market files during their first date.

Although Max only appeared to be telling Carmel about his self-harming problem because she'd rumbled him, the heart-to-heart did manage to offer a deeper insight into his troubled state of mind.

Max lied to Carmel that he was searching in her drawer for a lighter to burn himself – explaining that he turned to self-harm when he felt out of control in certain situations.

Max went on to reveal that he started harming himself when he went to prison, but has failed to stop since coming out and often turns back to it when he feels anxious or uncertain.

After showing Carmel his scarred arm, Max said: "Sometimes when I feel nervous or I don't know what's going to happen, I just feel out of control all over again."

Max's honesty over his self-harming appeared to bring him even closer to Carmel, with the pair even sharing a kiss later on.

Upcoming scenes will see their relationship step up a gear as they head off to a hotel room, but is Carmel making a big mistake in getting involved with him?

EastEnders continues on Monday, July 24 at 8pm on BBC One.
