Jake Wood, otherwise known as the ruthless, revenge-driven Max Branning, has given EastEnders fans another hint of the drama that's in store this Christmas.

Max has been orchestrating his revenge against everyone who had a hand in wrongfully sending him down for Lucy Beale's murder since he was released from prison earlier this year, but it's the festive season (of course) that will tip Max over the edge.

"Max goes on a murderous, psychotic bender," Jake told The Sun.

"It is all coming to a head and hopefully, in years to come, it will be seen as one of the best and most iconic Christmas episodes ever."

He added: "When I was reading the Christmas scripts the only way I could make sense of what Max was doing was that he was having a psychotic episode.

"He's reached pretty much rock bottom and he's a dangerous man, because he has convinced himself that he has absolutely nothing to lose. He's unhinged.

"To my mind, this is Max at his lowest ebb - and he's capable of murder, 100 per cent."

And as for whether or not this whole storyline will see Max written out of the soap for good? Well, the actor is pretty accepting of that too.

"I never felt Max was irredeemable, because he has very genuine reasons for doing what he's doing," he added. "He was put inside for 20 years for something he didn't do and left to rot.

"But Max being Max, he always goes about things in the wrong way. Some people think this is the end of the road and I'm not sure whether the road ends or continues.

"There are plenty of options, plenty of ways it could continue. But if it's the end of story, then so be it. It's been a great story."

The Christmas episodes will also see the departure of Max's daughters, Lauren and Abi Branning (played by Jacqueline Jossa and Lorna Fitzgerald), but it still remains to be seen whether Max is involved in that too.

"It's incredibly sad to see the girls go," he said. "Obviously I've watched Lorna grow up, she feels like a member of my own family now, as does Jacqueline.

"But I'm very excited to see what they go on to do and I'm sure they will both be incredibly successful. They are both very down-to-earth and talented young women. I'm really excited for them."

We already know that Ian Beale will receive a chilling death threat from Max, and with Stacey Slater's phone – full of Max's dark secrets – being returned to her on Christmas Day, just how far will Max go? And what will be the consequences?
