In a double bill of episodes that saw Charity expose Megan and Graham's affair, Robert Sugden attempt to parent Liv, and Lachlan find himself increasingly suspicious of, well, everything, it was the shift in Moira and Matty's relationship that got a lot of Emmerdale fans talking tonight (July 12).

Moira (Natalie J Robb) was left devastated in tonight's first episode when she got a call saying that Matty had been attacked, prompting her and Cain to rush to hospital to be with her child.

Viewers will know that Moira has been struggling to accept Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) following the revelation that he's transitioned during his years away from the village, but the shocking attack appears to prove that Moira is ready to be there for Matty after all – and viewers were particularly pleased to note Moira began using male pronouns to refer to Matty too:

Unfortunately, Matty doesn't seem to want his mum there, especially when she continues to wonder if Matty's being transgender is the reason why he was attacked in the first place.

Moira also continued to struggle to understand why Matty is transitioning, leading to a heartbreaking conversation between the pair.

"I'm scared for me, if I don't do this," Matty tells Moira.

In the end, Moira and Matty reach an agreement after a lot of tense moments, and Moira promises to try and accept Matty for who he is.

"I don't want to be released of my responsibilities," Moira says. "I want to look after you, you're my child, no matter what. And I'm always going to love you.

"I'm not saying I'm going to get it right, that it's going to be easy and that I'm not going to struggle, but I'll try."

Next week's spoilers show that Matty Barton is set to return to the village, and after their strained interactions in tonight's episodes, Moira knows she has a lot of making up to do. Could this be the first step towards Moira accepting Matty?

Emmerdale continues tomorrow night (July 13) at 7pm on ITV.
