Encouraged by Kim, Mary then prepares to come out to Rhona, but she’s nervous about doing so and her daughter always seems so busy. A little later, though, Mary does tell a stunned Rhona that she’s a lesbian and reveals that the woman she fell in love with was her recently deceased neighbour Louise.
Struggling to process the information, Rhona then starts to question whether her whole family was based on lies. And Mary, for her part, is hurt and worried by how Rhona has reacted. Events then come to a head when Rhona announces to a crowded room that her mother is gay!
It’s a big week for Rhona’s partner Marlon, too, who’s seen struggling but ultimately managing to take his first steps with a walking frame.
The achievement leaves him tired, but after later waking up, he’s surprised to be on the receiving end of an impromptu marriage proposal from Rhona. How will he react?
Attack trauma for Nicola
Danger awaits Nicola when she heads to a bar with both Laurel and Bernice. The aim of the evening is to ease tensions after the recent council rivalry, but efforts are scuppered when Nicola heads off early. But, on her way to the car, Nicola is confronted by a gang of teenaged girls and mugged, beaten and left bloodied.
After waking in hospital, a groggy Nicola is questioned about the attack but lies and says she can’t remember the details. But in reality, she’s actually embarrassed about the fact that she was set upon by teenagers.
Later on, Gabby finds video footage of the assault and Jimmy’s heart breaks when he realises Nicola felt too ashamed to talk to him. In the end, though, Nicola recounts the traumatic details to Harriet and expresses her fear that the attackers will track her down as they’re now in possession of her driving licence.
As her anxieties spiral, Nicola starts to fret that her children will be targeted next. And when she admits that she thought she was going to die, Jimmy is dismayed to learn that his wife has been left broken by events.
Cain discovers Faith’s cancer secret
Cain returns home from Scotland without warning, which leaves Moria worrying about how he’ll react to Faith being in the house. And his opening move to accuse Faith of being hungover when what she’s really suffering with are the side-effects from her chemotherapy treatment.
Hiding her heartbreak, Faith accepts Moira’s apology before asking Chas to make some plans for her birthday, hoping this will give her the chance to make peace with Cain. But when he’s tricked into attending a party for his mum at the Woolpack, Cain reacts angrily and ends up telling her of his wish for her to drop dead.
Faith then reveals that her cancer is back and is now incurable…
