Emmys 2020: Actor's awkward moment at 'virtual' ceremony

The realities of ‘virtual’ award ceremonies in the era of COVID-19 really hit home during the 72nd Emmy Awards, which saw Jimmy Kimmel host the ceremony to an audience-less studio while A-listers watched on via live stream from their homes.

From technical difficulties to pyjamas and on-air profanity, TV’s night of nights was the most, well... unusual to date — and are likely a taste of the awards season to come.

But it was actor, writer and comedian Ramy Youssef, who was nominated two Emmys for his TV show, Ramy, who had one of the most cringe-worthy experiences of all when it came to the event’s new, coronavirus-adjusted format.

As the nominees were unable to come to the Emmys, the Emmys quite literally came to them in the form of hazmat-clad staffers brandishing golden trophies.

To avoid spoiling the result, a hazmat award-holder was stationed outside all nominees’ homes, including Ramy’s, whether they were winners or losers. Sadly, Ramy, who was up for both Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series, the latter was the case.

Not only was he left emptyhanded, but the poor guy had to watch as the hazmat award-holder gave him a cheery wave through his screen glass door before turning on their heel and striding away.

Ramy lost out to Schitt’s Creek star Eugene Levy who won Outstanding Lead Actor and Dan Levy and Andrew Cividino who won Outstanding Directing. All-in-all, Schitt’s Creek scooped seven gongs.

Despite the brutal blow, Ramy managed to capture footage of the hilarious yet heartbreaking moment which he’s since uploaded to Twitter much to users’ delight.

The four-second clip — which he dryly captioned, “When you lose the Emmy” — has been viewed 2.3 million times and counting and sparked a flurry of outraged and sympathetic comments.

“Wait. They show up to everyone’s and leave????” tweeted one user.

“The wave is what is so insane about this,” remarked another.

Others were able to see the funny side, with one user writing, “This deserves an Emmy”.

“The intern in the Emmys hazmat suit deserves a raise!” joked another.

“The #Emmys giveth and The #Emmys taketh away...”
