The Emmys will be virtual in 2020
The Emmys will be held virtually this year in light of the ongoing pandemic. The event will be broadcast on 20 September.
The news follows the nominees announcement on 29 July, in which a record number of Black actors were given Emmy nods, making up 34.3 per cent of the 102 acting nominations, Variety reports. That's a jump from 19.8 per cent last year and 27.7 per cent in 2018.
In a letter from Emmy executive producers, including Jimmy Kimmel, nominees were told to prepare from home or any other location that they choose to be. The event is usually held in LA.
“As you’ve probably guessed, we’re not going to be asking you to come to the Microsoft Theatre in downtown LA on September 20th,” the letter says. “This year, it’s still going to be TV industry’s biggest night out… but we’ll come to you!”
The letter reassured guests that although the event will be virtual, none of the glamour will be spared. "We’re going to make you look fabulous – we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to allow to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on screen” moments.’”
It is still undecided which parts of the ceremony will be live and whether winners will be told in advance. The informal theme for the evening will be 'come as you are, but make an effort'.
"If you want to be in formal wear, we’d love that, but equally if you’re in the UK and it’s 3am, perhaps you want to be in designer pyjamas and record from your bed," reads the letter. "We want to work with you to style your moments, but want you to guide us on your levels of comfort – where you want to be, who you want to be with, what you want to wear etc."
