Dyson's Air Purifying Headphones have been in the making for six long years with more than 500 prototypes before the design was finalised. And they're finally here.

The headphones are designed to simultaneously purify the air you breathe while you listen to music.

The headphones are called the Dyson Zone and are Dyson's first wearable purifier.

Designed to tackle noise pollution and air quality, they filter out gas and allergens, while providing excellent audio quality with external noise cancellation.

The mechanics of the headphones are relatively simple.

A small compressor has been inserted into each ear cup to draw air through dual-layer filters and send two streams of purified air to the wearer’s nose and mouth.

There's advanced noise cancellation technology within the headphones too.

Several microphones prevent unwanted environmental noise, and large, angled ear cushions mould around the listener’s ear, with a medium foam density and headband clamp force-engineered for comfort and optimal noise reduction.

The design of the headphones has been through several iterations.

They started life with a snorkel-type device and ended up with the filtration device sitting across the nose and mouth.

The mouthpiece doesn't touch the wearer's face, something Dyson engineers believe provides a point of difference from ordinary face masks.

"Developing a non-contact solution was a must for Dyson engineers, to avoid the discomfort and irritation often associated with full-contact alternatives," says a Dyson spokesperson.

The headphones are expected to be on sale later this year, although no price has been announced.
