Coronation Street's Bruno Langley, known by many for playing Todd Grimshaw on the ITV soap for the past 17 years, has publicly apologised after pleading guilty to sexual assault.

In November this year, Langley pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two women in a Manchester night club, and he was subsequently sentenced to a 12-month community order, including 40 days of rehabilitation activity.

The actor was also fired from Coronation Street in October "following an internal inquiry", and now Langley has publicly spoken about the events of the last few months for the first time and apologised for his actions.

"I know I've let so many people down and I'm under no illusions here, this was all my own doing," Langley told The Mirror.

"I have no excuse, no one forced me to drink to such an extreme, but it is hard to explain why I would do anything as dreadful as that. It must have been awful for those women, and I am ashamed of myself. I'm truly sorry."

He continued to apologise to the women he assaulted too, and added that next year he plans to focus on building "a different life" for himself.

"I sincerely apologise to the women, from the bottom of my heart. I promise I will never do anything like that again," he continued.

"I accept my punishment because I know what I did was wrong. I'm not trying to attribute blame to anyone else other than myself.

"If I didn't have a beautiful boy that needed me, I'd be worried about how I'd get myself back. My main focus for 2018 will be building a different life.

"The only way I can prove how sorry I am to everyone involved is to make changes to my life and work on myself, to ensure this will never ever happen again."

Langley first appeared on Coronation Street in 2001, with Todd being the show's first openly gay character. He left in 2004, but later rejoined as a regular in 2013. His last scenes on the soap will air this Christmas.

Coronation Street airs on ITV.
