Finnish Prime Minister slammed for 'inappropriate' photoshoot

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has been slammed after wearing a black blazer with a plunging neckline in a magazine spread.

The 34-year-old was featured in Finnish fashion magazine Trendi with an Instagram post of the photo in question getting slammed with some calling her fashion choice "inappropriate" given her position.

The magazine described the Prime Minister as "a role model" and "influencer".

Mrs Marin told the publication that recent years have taken their toll on her, no doubt 2020 in particular, "It’s clear that these years are leaving their mark. This is not an ordinary job or a normal life but heavy in many ways. It may be that pressure and exhaustion accumulate and come later. In situations, it has been necessary to put emotions aside, but they do accumulate."

One user commented sarcastically, "Yeah a real role model. It would have been better in the darkest of clouds. Ridiculous that the breasts of a woman appear in two without a blouse. Someone with taste and sense of style."

Someone else said Mrs Marin's credibility had "eroded".

However, a social media movement quickly kicked off with men and women rallying behind the Prime Minister, using the hashtag #ImWithSanna and sharing images of themselves in similar outfits to the one she wears in the photo.

One user commented on the post, "Great picture of our prime minister. Remember that women will dress in sacks in the future, especially in magazine photos, so that your competence or reliability is not called into question due to external factors."

Another said, "Stylish image. Anyone who condemns an over-open neck can stop hypocrisy. Our beautiful Prime Minister, who is a good role model for all Finnish women. A proud mother who in 2018 dared in her own ig-profile to publish a picture of breastfeeding her baby. A woman has breasts that are the same skin as the tip of the nose or knee."

Someone else added, "Absolutely stunning image and really great to advertise local jewelry to the world."

"Quite awesome that people support each other!" said one user.

Trendi Magazine shared some of the #ImWithSanna images to their Instagram account showing women of all ages wearing a black blazer.

It was also pointed out that there have been unusual photos taken of previous Finnish leaders including President Urho Kekkonen and Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, according to YLE.

Professor of Gender Studies at Tampere University Anu Koivunen told the publication, "There are certainly some who think that Sanna Marin shouldn't appear in glamour magazines because it diminishes her position as a prime minister or politician."

She added, "These politicians know very well what kind of discussions they are starting. They are very media savvy and this social media storm [over Marin's outfit] did not come as a surprise," Koivunen said.

"Marin's actions are done with full cognizance. The photo caption in the Trendi article reads that Marin is aware that a woman's appearance is always a matter of debate and that is why she, as prime minister, always strives to dress the same," she said.
