FKA Twigs Opens Up About The 'Horrific' Racist Abuse She Experienced While Dating Robert Pattinson
FKA Twigs has spoken openly about the racist abuse she suffered online when she was in a relationship with Robert Pattinson.
Twigs - whose real name is Tahliah Barnett - dated the Twilight actor from 2014 to 2017 and were engaged for a brief period of time.
Joining journalist Louis Theroux on his BBC podcast, Grounded, the 33-year-old recently opened up about the racism she has encountered throughout her life and childhood, divulging that some of the most vile abuse came when she was targeted on social media by Pattinson's fans when they began dating.
'It was really horrific, it was at a time where I felt like I couldn't really talk about it,' she told Theroux. '...People just called me the most hurtful and ignorant names under the planet.'
Twigs told Theroux that 'of course' a lot of the racist abuse she received centred around her high-profile relationship. While she didn't mention Pattinson by name, she confirmed the relationship in question began in 2014 which was when she started dating the incoming Batman actor.
'He was the white Prince Charming and I think they considered that he should definitely be with somebody white and blonde and not me.'
'... It was deeply unfair that at the time I was made to feel so self-conscious and so ugly and yeah, man it was a lot. That period was a lot.'
Following her split from Pattinson, Twigs dated Shia LaBeouf for less than a year in 2019. In December, Twigs filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf claiming physical and emotional abuse and coercive behaviour.
Opening up about this on Theroux's podcast after Twigs' claims were made public, the artist elaborated on her claims in their lawsuit and spoke of the mental health effects - including PTSD and panic attacks - LaBeouf's alleged behaviour had on her for which she is now receiving therapy.
LaBeouf has denied 'many' of the allegations, calling them 'untrue', but in a separate statement to the New York Times he apologised to former partners for being 'abusive to myself and everyone around me for years', attributing a lot of his behaviour to his alcohol addiction and mental health disorders.
Now, Twigs is in a relationship with the 1975's frontman Matt Healy who praised his 'icon' of a partner publicly on Instagram following her NYT interview.
