French hero slammed for 'disrespectful' goal celebration

Antoine Griezmann has been slammed by fans for a “disrespectful” goal celebration after he scored a contentious penalty against Croatia.

The Frenchman was accused of taunting Croatia after celebrating his goal with a ‘Take the L’ dance from the popular video game Fortnite.

Despite being named man of the match in France’s 4-2 victory, the 27-year-old’s heroics were soiled by the celebration that didn’t sit well with some fans.

Griezmann, who has been celebrating goals with the dance from the video game since May, gave the celebration an airing on the biggest stage in France’s World Cup final against Croatia.

France were awarded a penalty after VAR called on referee Nestor Pitana to review his decision not to award a spot-kick after Griezmann’s corner struck Ivan Perisic on the arm in the area.

After sending Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subašić the wrong way, the France striker wheeled away holding making an ‘L’ for loser with his hand.

Unfortunately for Griezmann, the post-goal celebration wasn’t the only incident that struck a chord with the fans.

The French striker assisted the opening goal of the final, but the action he took to be awarded the free-kick had some fans pull Griezmann up for diving.

Griezmann took a tumble when Croatia’s Marcelo Brozovic appeared to clip his heels early in the first-half, and the free-kick he received resulted in a devastating own-goal for Croatia.
