Fresh twist after Aussie woman fined $2664 over Subway sandwich

A Perth woman has shared the gift she received from Subway after copping a weighty fine for not declaring her sandwich at an Aussie airport.

Jessica Lee was slapped with a $2664 fine because she didn't declare her chicken and lettuce sub after travelling with it from Singapore to Perth earlier this month.

The 19-year-old was outraged and shared the ordeal on TikTok where the video racked up more than one million views.

Among the thousands of comments was one from Domino's Australia's TikTok account which tagged Subway and urged the fast-food chain to "help her."

In Subway Australia’s cryptic reply, the company said "we’re on it" and the sandwich maker did not disappoint.

Subway makes fine 'worth every single cent

Posting a new video on Monday, Miss Lee revealed a gift she was sent by Subway — a voucher to the value of $2664.

"Are you kidding? she wrote in the video caption, with on-screen text saying: "Subway makes my fine worth every single cent."

The Perth teen read out a letter that was inside the box sent by Subway after hearing about her unfortunate mistake.

"To say thank you for eating fresh, we’ve uploaded a sub card with $2,664 just for you," the letter read, which is the same amount as her fine.

"We hope this covered all of your chicken and lettuce needs," the letter continued, with a sign-off from "your Subway fans".

Ms Lee appeared ecstatic by the offer as she rummaged through the rest of the box.

She also received a selection of Subway merchandise including a bucket hat, sock, a drink bottle and more.

An ‘expensive mistake’

The gift came after a disappointed Ms Lee fessed up to her "major mistake" online.

"Basically I bought a footlong Subway at Singapore airport because I was a hungry girl after my 11 hour flight,” the 19-year-old explained.

"I ate six inches before my second flight and then saved the other six inches for the flight, which they were more than happy with, they were fine with that.”

"And then I didn’t eat it on the plane and then we came to Australia and we landed and AHH!"

Under Australian Border Force rules, "food items brought into Australia need to be declared on your Incoming Passenger Card".

“Australia has very strict biosecurity procedures at our international borders to prevent the introduction of harmful pests and diseases," it said on its website.

Subway fans gush over 'amazing' act

TikTok users praised Subway for the incredible gesture.

"This is why I’ll always be a subway supporter," another vowed, adding: "They’re amazing."

Others said while they're happy for her, they "wish Subway workers got the same sort of treatment".

"I worked for Subway for literally more than a third of my life and never got fun merch," one said.

"I worked for Subway for freaking years. I am happy for you but man I wish they were this good to the workers," another wrote.

Yahoo News Australia has reached out to Subway for comment but is yet to hear back.
