German Conservatives, Scholz’s SPD Slip in Latest Opinion Poll

(Bloomberg) -- Germany’s opposition conservatives maintained a big lead over Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats in a new poll, though both lost ground marginally compared with the previous week.

The center-right CDU/CSU alliance led by Friedrich Merz slipped one percentage point to 31% in the Forsa survey for broadcaster RTL/ntv published Tuesday, while Scholz’s center-left SPD dropped by the same margin to 16%.

The far-right Alternative for Germany strengthened its grip on second place, rising by one point to 20%, while the Greens also gained a point and were on 13%.

Germany is holding a snap election on Feb. 23 after Scholz ended his three-party ruling coalition with the Greens and Free Democrats at the beginning of November.

Campaigning has gathered pace since the start of the year, though the increased number of public appearances by the lead candidates has so far had little impact on the polls.
