This article contains spoilers for the New Girl series finale, which aired in the US last night.
Zooey Deschanel's sitcom New Girl came to end last night (May 15) in the US – though without TJ Miller, who originally auditioned to play Schmidt.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Deschanel revealed that Max Greenfield's character Schmidt was almost played by Miller, who put his own spin on the "douchebag jar" contributor when he auditioned.
"He insisted he wanted to read for Schmidt, and Schmidt had this scene where he took off his shirt," Zooey said.
"He was like, 'Excuse me for a second,' so he walked out and came back with his shirt off, and he had completely covered himself in an entire bottle of baby oil.
"So that was memorable," she added.
She explained: "I thought there was another version that could've been a little bit more dark - not like dark horrible, but it was always kind of like, 'Do Nick and Jess end up together?'
"I thought there could've been a version where they don't, and it's more bittersweet. But I love this version, too. It's more in the realm of the romantic comedy that I think this show really probably is at its heart."
New Girl airs on E4 in the UK, and hopefully we'll get a season seven airdate soon.
