Budget constraints aren't a problem you'd usually associate with Game of Thrones (rumour has it that each episode of season 8 will have a budget of £11 million) but that was nevertheless the supposed case for why Ghost, Jon Snow's direwolf and a fan favourite from the show, didn't make the cut for the show's previous season.

In a since-deleted tweet from writer and producer Bryan Cogman earlier this year, he wrote that he "tried" to include Ghost in 'Stormborn', episode two from the most-recent season.

"FYI ... We shot a Jon/Ghost scene," Cogman said. "Didn't make it in. I tried! Thx for watching everybody."

On top of that, director Miguel Sapochnik revealed that there were originally plans for Ghost to be in 'Battle of the Bastards' as well, but they were scrapped due to cost.

"[Ghost] was in [the Battle of the Bastards] in spades originally, but it's also an incredibly time consuming and expensive character to bring to life," he told Business Insider last year. "Ultimately, we had to choose between Wun-Wun and the direwolf, so the dog bit the dust."

Until now. Because one fan has taken it upon themselves to resurrect the ghost of, err, Ghost, starting a GoFundMe campaign called 'Bring back Ghost' that aims to raise £500,000 ($668,000).

"Raising money for cgi so that ghost features in season 8 of GOT," the page says. "Please help Jon reunite with his beloved direwolf. Also, no-one tell Jon, he knows nothing. Want it to be a surprise he'll never forget."

So far the campaign has a grand total of ZERO donations, which means HBO will either need to reach a bit deeper into their pockets, or we'll have to be content with no computer-generated wolves in season 8.

Such is life.

Game of Thrones season 8 is due to premiere in 2019. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
