Graham Mexted passes away

Former All Black Graham Mexted has passed away.

The 82-year-old is the father of iconic All Black No 8 and current TV commentator Murray Mexted.

Graham Mexted played six matches for the All Blacks between 1950-51, including a sole test appearance in the 11-8 win over the British Lions at Eden Park in 1950.

Also a No 8, he went on the 1951 tour of Australia, playing a further fiver matches.

Graham Mexted represented Wellington during the late 1940s through to the mid-1950s. He even played rep rugby before he made his senior club debut, being promoted to the Wellington provincial side from the Tawa B team.

An impressive performance in Wellington's match against the touring 1950 Lions lead to his first All Black call-up following the unavailability of Jack McNab.

Graham Mexted was unwanted for the All Blacks following the 1951 tour, but continued to taste success the field.

He was a member of the 1953 Wellington team which lifted the Ranfurly Shield off Waikato.

Post his playing days, Graham Mexted was heavily involved in club rugby as a coach and administrator.
