The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been voted the “most respected” royals, after the Queen, by young people.

A survey of 13 to 25-year-olds found that the Queen is the royal most deserving of respect, with 26 per cent of votes, closely followed by Prince Harry and Meghan with 21 per cent. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received 11 per cent of votes.

Participants said they were fans of Harry and Meghan because “they are brave and resilient - even when things go wrong, they carry on”, reports The Independent.

The survey was led by charity Stem4, which strives for positive mental health in teenagers. Dr Nihara Krause, CEO at stem4, explained in a statement: “To earn the respect of young people today you don’t need to earn a fortune or have good looks.

“It’s far more important that you show bravery, resilience and compassion for others and for nature. Those are certainly qualities the Queen shares with some of the other names on the list such as David Attenborough and Marcus Rashford.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced criticism by the press after stepping away from royal tradition and down from their positions as senior members of the royal family.

In a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year, Meghan opened up about suffering with her mental health during her time as a senior royal family member and having suicidal thoughts while pregnant.

At her lowest, she said she "just didn't want to be alive any more" and explained how the royal household flatly denied her seeking psychiatric help, because it "wouldn't be good for the institution".

"I went to one of the most senior people to get help," Meghan explained. "And I share this because, there are so many people who are afraid to voice that they need help, and I know how hard it is to not just voice it but to be told no."

She added that she'd felt ashamed of her feelings: “I was really ashamed to say it at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially because I know how much loss he suffered."
