But while plenty of 'naked' dresses and bold statements were on show, social media virtually exploded after the appearance of Hollywood star Hailee Steinfeld, who was so unrecognisable some people initially didn't even believe it was her.
The Pitch Perfect star had swapped her usual long brunette locks for a stylish platinum blonde bob and light eyebrows to match.
She wore a glittering beige slip Iris Van Herpen dress with radiant, petal-shaped panels and matching Jimmy Choo platforms.
She sent Twitter fans into a tizzy over the new look.
"Hailee Steinfeld legit made me gasp (and had to triple check it was her lol) — a top-tier look #MetGala," one person wrote.
"I am shooketh. I cannot reconcile that is Hailee Steinfeld," another agreed.
"It's her eyebrows and her hair. It completely changes how she looks," another said.
"It's like she picked out her dress and built her look around it. And now she's an angel for the night…," was another comment, praising her entire ensemble.
She put her fans' minds at ease taking to her Instagram after the event to shed light on her transformation, and confirm for the doubters it was indeed her.
"[And] if you don’t know now you know…," she captioned a set of photos showing her getting her hair and makeup done.
Just a few weeks ago Hailee was still rocking her brunette look on the red carpet during the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 04 in Italy.
For the Met Gala in 2019, the 'Most Girls' singer wore one of Viktor & Rolf's meme-inspiring gowns, that read "No Photos Please", along with a black hair bow, Judith Leiber camera-shaped clutch and Harry Winston jewellery.
And before that in 2018, she went with a simple white Atelier Prabal Gurung gown with high slit and ruffled train, plus a crown and Jimmy Choo heels.
