Horrifying moment jockey runs into path of oncoming horse race

This is the terrifying moment a young jockey inadvertently stepped into the path of a horse race as he was jogging around the track.

Irish jockey Evan Daly, 18, was extremely lucky to avoid being trampled during a race at Navan in Ireland on Sunday.

With two rides booked for later in the afternoon, Daly was out jogging on the track during the Grade Three For Auction Novice Hurdle.

Jockeys often jog around the track to get a feel for conditions or to lose weight, but Daly appeared to get the schedule wrong and was out during a race.

As the horses entered the back straight, Daly could be spotted just in front of the field.

As the horses bared down, Daly realised his proximity to the horses at the last second and quickly moved to his right to get out of the way.

The claiming apprentice was called in before the stewards and told the panel that he was wearing headphones and did not realise the horses were behind him.

He was cautioned by the stewards.

“The stewards enquired into the reason why ET Daly, rider, was jogging on the racing line in the back straight during the running of this race,” a report said.

“Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who apologised for what had occurred.

“Having considered all the evidence, the stewards cautioned the rider to be more careful when out on the course in future.”
