Ski slopes in Australia have mostly been closed for the past three years, but are back in a big way.

Skiing can be an expensive holiday, but there are ways to do it on a budget.

Here's how to hit the slopes without breaking the bank.

1. Pre-purchase lift tickets online

Some resorts offer discounts if you purchase your lift tickets online, especially if you buy them in advance.

"Some online lift tickets also include added benefits such as night skiing, gondola rides, or other perks like free skiing in the afternoon," advises the CEO of ski retail specialist, Decathlon, Olivier Robinet.

"Buying online means you can also skip the queues and head straight to the lift on arrival."

2. Take your own food

“If you travel to the snow during peak season, costs are always higher - this includes food and drink,” Robinet says.

“Pack your own lunch and nibbles to help reduce the cost when you need to stop for morning tea or lunch.”

3. Go mid-week

If you can avoid weekends and school holidays, you're much more likely to find a bargain.

"Many rooms and villas are cheaper during the week," says Robinet.

Avoiding peak times means you'll be more likely to get a better experience.

"Queues are a lot smaller and you won’t have to deal with so many people on the snow," says Robinet.

4. Be flexible about where you stay

In general, the more ski lifts there are, the higher the accommodation price, advises Robinet.

"Look for accommodation which is close to major hubs, but not actually on the slope.

"This will prevent you paying a premium.

"It's also a good idea to find accommodation with a kitchen so you can prepare food at home, rather than eating out all the time."

5. Get cheap snow gear

“Hiring equipment is ideal if you're planning on only going to the snow once," says Robinet.

"But if you're aiming to go more than once - and you want to be able to use some of your winter clothing for activities other than playing in the snow, purchasing your gear is a good option."

Decathlon currently has big savings on a range of snow gear, including skis, boots, helmets, ski pants, ski jackets, gloves and goggles.
