I bought 7 coats at Target — here are the ones I'd recommend

From dressier toppers to sporty cropped puffers, there's a little something for everyone at prices that won't leave you out in the cold.

Decisions, decisions! Target has stepped up its game in the outerwear department as we barrel toward winter. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I'm a little ashamed to admit how many coats I own. In my defense, I've always lived in the Northeast and take good care of my clothing, so it shouldn't be surprising that I've accumulated quite a collection over the years. Could I go the rest of my life without buying another coat? Probably. Will that happen? Definitely not. Mostly because I friggin' love coats. Puffers, wool coats, teddy coats — I'm a sucker for them all.

Recently, I headed to Target for a duvet cover, but the outerwear section was calling my name. Before I knew it, my fleece jacket was on the ground, and I was trying on coats like there was no tomorrow. Miraculously, I made it out of the store without a new coat, but my resolve weakened on the drive home. By that night, I'd ordered seven coats on the Target app (just to see what they looked like in person, of course).

I'm obviously not keeping all seven, but I was seriously impressed with the quality and fit across the board. The next best thing to having all these gorgeous coats to myself is telling others about them, so if you're in the market for wallet-friendly outerwear with style, keep reading.

target burgundy coat
I fell in love with this deep burgundy color. I don't have anything like it, which means I should probably keep it, right? (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

In a sea of black, navy, and gray, how nice is it to find a topper in an unexpected (but still perfectly seasonal) color? I was excited to see this faux wool topcoat in person, and it didn't disappoint. The hue is beautiful, the material isn't itchy and it looks like it's much more expensive than $60. A minor criticism: The fabric isn't super heavy, so you'd need to layer a sweater underneath this one on cold winter days.

Available in eight colors and sizes up to 3X, this classic style gets high marks from Target shoppers who say "the fit is fabulous" and that it "will elevate any casual look effortlessly."

Like me, some shoppers did note the lighter weight of this coat. "I wish it was a little heavier" one reviewer noted. Another added, "It's not super warm, but great for mild fall temps."

teddy coat
Yes, I would very much like to look like a cuddly teddy bear all winter, thank you very much. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Some people will tell you that the teddy coat trend has come and gone. Me? I'm never letting it go, and you can't make me. This pick is plush, plus it has a good weight and the camel color is that just-right neutral shade of tan. My one issue with this coat? While it looked really good unbuttoned, it didn't look so hot when I closed it. That's a deal-breaker for me because I need to be bundled up when it's cold, but other folks might not mind it.

One important sizing note on this teddy coat — it's designed to be oversized. If you're looking for a slim, sleek coat that hugs your body, this ain't it. But if you want to feel like you're wrapped in a nubby blanket every time you step outside, you've found your go-to. It comes in sizes up to 4X.

target black white coat
Of all the coats I tried at Target, this one felt the most high-end. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I'll admit that I didn't have high hopes for this coat when I ordered it. It just didn't look like anything special from the pictures. But when I put it on, I fell in love. First, it's heavy! It feels like the winter coats I've paid way more for at department stores. The fabric didn't feel thin or flimsy, the shape was a true cocoon silhouette and the sizing was perfect. I don't have a tweed coat like this one, so it's a strong contender for my keep pile.

"Love it! Looks like something you see on the streets of NYC, but I did not pay a hefty price! It is super thick, and great quality," one fan of this style wrote. And I couldn't agree more!

In addition to black and white (shown), this coat also comes in white and maroon. Choose from sizes up to 4X.

target green puffer coat
No plans to wear this super cropped puffer jacket any time soon. #sorrynotsorry (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I'll just come out and say it: I couldn't get into this cropped puffer. First, it's incredibly light, and I really don't think it would keep me all that warm in the winter. Second, it's loud! Remember swishy pants? It sounds like that ... times 10. Last but not least, doesn't a puffy coat being this short kind of defeat the purpose? Y'know, of staying toasty and cozy? I'm sure there's someone somewhere who can make this work, but it's not for me.

Ready for a plot twist? Some Target shoppers really love this coat, available in three colors and sizes up to XXL. It has a not-too-shabby 4.8 out of 5 stars and quite a few positive comments. "I absolutely love this jacket! It is very, very cute and stylish, along with being warm and cozy," one fan wrote. Another said, "This jacket is warm and light at the same time! I didn't think it would be so warm because it's not thick or heavy." (It just goes to show ... your mileage may vary!)

leopard print coat
I couldn't resist trying this coat because it was giving major Margot Tenenbaum vibes. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

No, I don't currently own a leopard print coat. Yes, I would very much like to. Sadly, this wasn't the one for me. The faux fur material was a bit spiky and scratchy, and the coat just didn't look as good on me as it did on the model. It's also fairly lightweight and probably not warm enough for frigid temperatures without a few layers underneath. So, the hunt continues.

Looking back, I should've read the comments on this one before placing my order. Many shoppers mention sizing down, which may have fixed the issues I had with the fit. Choose from XS-4X.

Still, plenty of people are raving about it. "Vintage fur goodness!" one reviewer wrote. "This coat looks very vintage luxury from the collar to the cut of the coat. Pictures do not do the fur justice."

target black faux fur coat
I have no idea where I'd wear a coat like this, but I do know this: It's among the softest faux fur I've ever felt. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

This black jacket is unlike anything I currently own, so I was excited to try it on. And I was impressed! The faux fur is luxe and soft, the button closures are unique and the patch pockets are nice and roomy. I feel like this is the perfect coat to wear over a fancy dress to a holiday party or a gala. I don't go to many of those, but maybe if I keep this coat the invites will magically come?

Like some of the other styles from Target I tried, this coat runs a bit large — or "huge" in the words of some reviewers. I ordered my normal size and I liked that I had plenty of room for a thick sweater underneath, but you could probably get away with ordering a size down for a closer fit. It comes in XS-4X.

target red coat
Another cropped puffer, another no for me. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I really liked the cheery red hue of this puffer, but I just can't with a coat that's shorter than my sweater. Unlike the other puffy coat above, this one did have a nice weight to it and I felt more confident that it would actually keep me warm ... just not anything below my belly button, that is.

So red's not your color? You're in luck, because this coat also comes in black and tan in sizes up to 4X. Shoppers give it 4.5 stars, but several suggest sizing up for a more comfortable fit.
