In his final outing, Indiana Jones is on the search for a mystical artifact called the Dial of Destiny, which has the power to turn back time. He teams up with his goddaughter Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, in this latest adventure, which brings him around the globe. Also on the hunt, however, is former Nazi scientist Jurgen Voller, played by Mads Mikkelsen, and his right hand man Klaber (Boyd Holbrook). Along the way, Indy reunites with his old pal Sallah, played by John Rhys-Davies, and old flame Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). The cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Olivier Richters and more.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” opened with middling reviews and ended up making $383 million worldwide at the box office.
In his review, Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ works by translating Indy’s old daredevil kick-ass fervor into the pure will with which he’s now hunting for the artifact. As the film leaps international locations, the action starts to feel more conventional and less ‘Indiana Jones’-y. Did I mention that the reason the Antikythera is so valuable is that it can create fissures in time that will theoretically allow one to time travel? The film actually tests this out, with spectacularly preposterous results. But time travel, in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ is really an unconscious metaphor, since it’s the movie that wants to go back in time, completing our love affair with the defining action-movie-star role of Harrison Ford.”
