Iraqis burn French flag on Prophet's birthday

Iraqis burned the French flag at an event on Wednesday (October 28) commemorating Prophet Mohammad's birthday, amid anger over the French President Emmanuel Macron's response to caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad, considered blasphemous by Muslims.

Percussionists performed religious chants and worshippers lit candles in the courtyard of the Imam Abu Hanifa al-Numan Mosque.

The recent events in France were close to mind, with many sending a message of condemnation to the French President.

France warned its citizens living or travelling in some Muslim-majority countries to take extra security precautions as anger surged over the cartoons.

On October 28, Iraqi health authorities recorded 4,043 new coronavirus infections, bringing the country's total to 463,951 since the outbreak of the pandemic.
