The past two years have not been friendly to festivities, but Christmas remains a time for us to take stock of the year and recalibrate ourselves for the new year. Instead of cancelling Christmas, let us instead focus on how we can hold space to reflect and create a safe space for intimate celebrations.

Here are some of the things to keep your Christmas spirits up, and tips to take note of if you’re hosting celebrations at home.

Set up an environment for Christmas

If you’re heading out to Garden By The Bay, Orchard Road or most malls, you’ll find the festive spirit well and alive in the form of light ups and massive Christmas trees. But if you’re not, there are plenty of affordable decorating options to help you spruce up your own home.

For a start, you can simply put a Christmas wreath on your door. It's the perfect decoration if you want to get into the festive mood without seeming too much.

For something to adorn the inside of your house with, go big or go home doesn’t apply here. Instead of a huge tree (which comes with extra costs such as decorations and maintenance), these tiny (and real!) Christmas trees are much more manageable and would look so cute on a tabletop!

Of course, if you are not opposed to having a life-size Christmas tree in the house, then there are plenty of options you can still find now. The best bet right now is to get the artificial ones, since most of the live ones might have been snapped up. Plus, the artificial ones can be stowed away neatly for use year after year.

Stock up on Christmas goodies

From Redmart, Amazon, Taste Gourmet Market, Melvados and the myriad of Christmas deals on the market, you don’t need to step out of the house to get goodies such as delicious deli meats, baked Turkey, salad or cheese platters and more! It also reduces the effort needed to hold gatherings at home: simply receive, then plate the goodies nicely and you’ll have a dinner table to impress.

Host small intimate gatherings at home

A caveat first: The rule for house visits is five visitors limit in a day, not five at any given time. So if you’re thinking of rotating the guestlist in a day, it is highly recommended that you not do so, and simply spread out the Christmas cheer over more days.

After dinner, party games such as Catan, The Singaporean Dream, Saboteur and even good old Monopoly would be a great way to ease into the evening over a bottle of non-alcoholic mulled wine.

For alcoholic options, we have alcoholic advent calendars here and more alcohol deals here.

Also, if you’re doing plenty of dinners at home, then it make sense to dress up the table for Christmas, even if it’s just putting on a simple and elegant red tablecloth such as this.

Give(or gift!) what I can

If you’re lucky enough to be in the position of giving, Amazon provides a handy breakdown of gifting by filtering based on age, interest and more. Better still, consider supporting causes that matter to you most, whether it’s spending an afternoon volunteering or learn about wildlife around Singapore in this new articles series from a safe distance.
