Jennifer Lawrence knows that her new movie mother! is going to split opinion when it opens in cinemas tomorrow (September 15).

Speaking to press including Digital Spy, Lawrence revealed that she's excited to have worked on a movie that allows her to have a "different personality" and loves the fact that it won't be for everyone.

"It's not like we didn't know when we were making this movie. It's an assault. [Director Darren Aronofsky is] poking people in the eyes," she explained. "We knew that it's a movie you're either going to get and love it, or you're going to absolutely hate it."

If you think Lawrence is just hyping up mother!, she's not. It's genuinely a movie that will provoke strong responses either way.

Not for nothing was it called the "most controversial movie since A Clockwork Orange" in the very first reactions to Aronofsky's psychological horror, with the first official reviews making it sound like one of the most horrifying movies of the year.

And despite it effectively being a showcase for Lawrence with 66 minutes of the two-hour movie featuring a close-up of her face, Aronofsky told us it wasn't written for her.

"I actually was not thinking about Jennifer for it. I just never thought she'd be interested in doing something like this," he explained.

Thankfully she did sign up for it, even though she ended up having a "happy tent" on set to be away from the extras "because [she] didn't know what [she] would do", as she hadn't done anything so dark before.

Find out what all the fuss is about when mother! hits cinemas tomorrow (September 15).
