Joe Biden Says He Is 'Grateful' that Donald Trump Is 'Safe and Doing Well' Following Campaign Rally Shooting

Joe Biden says he is "grateful" that Donald Trump is "safe and doing well" following a shooting at a Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday, July 13.

Trump, 78, was seen with blood on his face and ear following the shooting, though his campaign said in a statement he is "fine" and being evaluated at a medical facility.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told outlets including ABC News and the Associated Press that both the shooter and at least one audience member are dead.

Trump was mid-speech when gunfire could be heard. After grabbing his ear, Secret Service agents rushed the stage and surrounded the former president before escorting him out of the area.

In a statement given to PEOPLE, the Trump campaign said the former president was "fine" and was "being checked out at a local medical facility."

In his own statement, Biden, 81, said, "I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information."

"Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety," Biden added. "There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also issued a statement, saying that he had been briefed on the situation and that police remained on the scene and are "working with our federal and local partners."

"Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable. It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States," Shapiro said in the statement, adding: "Lori and I are praying for President Trump, the Secret Service officers who protected him, those attending the event, and all of the first responders still on the scene."
